In Bolivia, a new cat species identified- first in over a century

A diminutive wild cat that inhabits Bolivia's cloud forest has been identified as a previously unknown species, marking the first time a new living cat species has been formally named and described in over a century.

The cat, called Tilcayo by local communities, is part of a group called tiger cats found across much of South America.

The report estimates that Rs 64.8 lakh crore, 21.5% of India's FY24 GDP, is dependent on the Himalayas.

But it is strictly regulated through the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The international treaty came into force in 1975, and India became a party to it in 1976. The treaty's aim is to ensure that cross-border trade in wildlife and plants is legal, sustainable and traceable without harming their survival in the wild.
